James Cameron Unveils ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ at D23: The Ultimate Fan Event
Attendees to last night’s Disney Entertainment panel at D23: The Ultimate Fan Event were treated to a preview of James Cameron’s third Avatar film, which will be titled Avatar: Fire and Ash.
Cameron was on hand for the festivities, as were Avatar stars Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana.
“The characters are so alive, and it feels so real. It’s also got very high emotional stakes — more than ever before,” Cameron told the audience. “We’re going into really challenging territory for all the characters you know and love.”
“You’ll See More of Pandora”
While Cameron did not showcase any footage from the film, he presented concept art that included Neytiri riding a banshee, a look at the Na’vi Ash People, and some kind of airship.
“You’ll see a lot more Pandora that you never saw before,” Cameron said. “It’s an insane adventure and a feast for the eyes, but it’s also got very high emotional stakes, more than ever before. We’re going into really challenging territory for all the characters you know and love.”
Cameron famously shot Fire and Ash concurrently with Avatar: The Way of Water, meaning that the film has largely been finished for years. Still, earlier this year Cameron revealed that he was still tinkering with the film.
“It’s pretty much in the can. We’re shooting pick-ups on 3, which is just filling in the last 2 or 3%, and we’ve also got live-action pick-ups in June, that’s another couple percent,” he said.
When Will ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’ Hit Theaters?
Fans will have to wait a little longer to see how the story of Jake and Neytiri plays out.
Avatar: Fire and Ash will hit theaters on December 19, 2025.
