Disney Is Set to Invest $5 Billion In European and U.K. Production
The Walt Disney Company is set to invest $5 billion in production across the United Kingdom and continental Europe over the next five years.
For the last decade, Disney has shot most of its biggest films at Pinewood Studios in the U.K., and it now looks like they have no plans of slowing down.
Among the recent films shot at Pinewood are Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, Black Widow, Eternals, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, The Little Mermaid, The Marvels, and Marvel’s current blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine.

Big Films Are on the Horizon
Speaking of the latest Marvel film, Disney’s European head, Jan Koeppen, says that Deadpool & Wolverine’s success shows that talk of superhero fatigue has been overblown.
“[The genre] seems to have a lot of life left,” he explained to Financial Times.

“We feel like we’re really on a roll again with movies, which is fantastic. I’ve been positive about people going to the movies again, and especially enjoying our movies.”
Looking ahead, films including Snow White and The Fantastic Four: First Steps are also set to be filmed at Pinewood.
Disney’s Streaming Business Continues to Grow
Disney’s expansion in Europe, however, is set to extend beyond its theatrical films. According to Koeppen, Disney+ will be at the center of the company’s European plans.

“We are probably one of the fastest-growing media companies in [Europe, the Middle East and Africa],” Koeppen explained. “We have been over the past few years, and . . . we have a lot more growth ahead of us.”
While Disney still has work to do to turn streaming into a growth business, the company revealed in its Q3 earnings report that its streaming division had reached profitability.

For his part, Koeppen is confident.
“We’ve always had amazing content, and that is what really will make us win in the end,” he said.
