Deadpool Creator Rob Liefeld Is Not Surprised By ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’s Success
While it was clear for weeks that Deadpool & Wolverine would be a hit for Marvel Studios, the film managed to shatter even the highest expectations.
On its way to grossing $824 million in just two weekends, the third installment in the Deadpool franchise delivered one of the biggest opening weekends ever, shattered numerous records for an R-rated film, and managed to already eclipse the grosses of both Deadpool and Deadpool 2.
While Deadpool & Wolverine’s unprecedented success has grabbed headlines around the world, the film’s historic start in theaters did not surprise Rob Liefeld.
Rob Liefeld Believed in ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’
For those who don’t know, Liefeld co-created Deadpool for Marvel Comics alongside Fabian Nicieza.
As perhaps the Merc with the Mouth’s biggest cheerleader, Liefeld has told anyone who would listen that the Deadpool & Wolverine was going to be a massive hit.
When the film hit theaters on July 26, Liefeld was proven right. The latest Marvel Studios film managed to surpass expectations and deliver a $211 million opening at the domestic box office.
As Deadpool & Wolverine was taking the box office by storm, ComicBook caught up with Liefeld at Comic-Con. The writer took a well-deserved victory lap.
“I knew it was gonna have a ‘2’ in it,” Liefeld said.
“I’ve been telling everybody, it can clear it. People are hung up on this rating. This isn’t 10 years ago … Today’s kids don’t think in PG-13 and R, and the stuff that they get online, it’s way more advanced. So our rating, let’s go, break it.”
A Historic Box Office Run
Liefeld is correct that many analysts thought Deadpool & Wolverine’s R-rating would prevent it from reaching the box office stratosphere. That, however, did not happen.
By the end of the week, Deadpool & Wolverine will have crossed the $1 billion mark and become the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time at the global box office.
While it remains to be seen how high the film can climb, it is an unmitigated success for Marvel Studios and a true return to form after a disappointing 2023.
Deadpool & Wolverine is in theaters now.
