Tropical Storm Debby Approaches Florida as Possible Hurricane
Whether an Orlando local or visiting Walt Disney World this weekend, we have all had our eyes on the tropical system that recently progressed into Tropical Storm Debby.
According to the National Hurricane Center, as of this morning, the storm is anticipated to hit Florida’s Gulf Coast as a hurricane on Monday.
Tropical Storm Debby
The NHC shared earlier today that Debby’s center was located 130 miles west-southwest of Tampa and 160 miles south-southwest of Cedar Key. Its maximum sustained winds were 65 mph as it moved north-northwest at 13 mph.
It produces tropical storm-force winds that extend out 140 miles.
Much of Central Florida has been declared a State of Emergency and is currently under a tornado watch. The counties include Orange, Osceola, Lake, Volusia, and Polk counties through 8 p.m. tonight.
Since becoming a tropical depression late Friday, this system has grown continuously over the last few days. It is anticipated to intensify once it hits the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico.
Governor DeSantis
Governor Ron DeSantis, during a press conference at the state’s Emergency Operations Center in Tallahassee, expressed the potential for quick storm development and intense conditions.
It could get up to 85, 90, 95 mph sustained wind. That is absolutely possible, particularly in parts of the state like here in Tallahassee. There’s going to be a lot of trees that are going to fall down. You’re going to have debris. You are going to have power interruption so just prepare for that.
He said the state Department of Emergency Management has 17,000 linemen prepared to work on power outages and further stressed that this is a big storm with the potential for flood waters, storm surges, and tornadoes.
We have assets in place in advance of the storm like we always do, and near the predicted areas of most severe impact.
The storm’s proposed path moves across the eastern Gulf of Mexico and reaches Florida Big Bend by Monday as a Category 1 hurricane.
