Hilbert Museum of California Art at Chapman University Hosts “Mary Blair Day”
The Hilbert Museum of California Art at Chapman University is hosting “Mary Blair Day” on August 7th, 2024.
This special event celebrates Mary Blair, one of the most iconic Disney animators, and one of the first female animators to gain Walt Disney’s admiration and trust.

The event is perfect for both local Disney enthusiasts and fans attending the D23 event in Anaheim later that week.
Who is Mary Blair?
Mary Blair is renowned for her vibrant and whimsical designs in Disney classics including “Alice in Wonderland,” “Peter Pan,” “Cinderella,” “Lady and the Tramp,” “The Three Caballeros,” and “Dumbo.”

She helped introduce modern art to Walt Disney and his Studio, and for nearly three decades, he touted her inspirational work in his animated films and theme parks.
Her work also includes her infamous contributions to Disneyland’s “it’s a small world” attraction.
The Exhibition
“Mary Blair’s Wonderland: Imagining Disney’s Alice” is an exhibition highlighting Blair’s unique approach to animation through concept art for the 1951 release of the animated classic.
It is curated by Hilbert Museum Director Mary Platt and will be on display until September 7th.

As part of “Mary Blair Day,” Platt will also present “The Magic and Flair of Mary Blair,” a 40-minute talk at 6 p.m. on August 7th in the Cinematic Arts Galleries in the museum’s North Wing.

To enter, costumes must depict a character from a Disney film or attraction designed by Blair, a color or other aspect of Blair’s artistic legacy, or the famous artist herself.
Afterwards, guests can stroll through the museum, which houses one of the largest private collections of Blair’s art and encompasses her creative influence and unique spirit.
