‘Star Wars: Skeleton Crew’ Will Feature New Droids and a Hoverbike
The next chapter in the Star Wars story will be written this December when Skeleton Crew premieres on Disney+.
Set in the era of the New Republic, the series will follow the adventures of a group of children who find themselves lost in space.
“When four kids make a mysterious discovery on their seemingly safe home planet, they get lost in a strange and dangerous galaxy,” the show’s synopsis reads.

“Finding their way home, meeting unlikely allies and enemies will be a greater adventure than they ever imagined.”
New Droids Are Coming
Yesterday, Lucasfilm shared a first look at Skeleton Crew with People, where star Jude Law and creators John Watts and Christopher Ford previewed the series and discussed the bond that the cast created.

In the interview, Watts also revealed that a new droid named SM 33 will be introduced.
“He’s like a rusty old, cranky droid that sort of reluctantly helps the kids along the way,” he said. “The other thing about him is that he’s the first mate of a mysterious ship.”

According to Law, the show’s droid and aliens were “an inspiration to work with.”
“Of course, you were expecting to work with droids and alien species, but you forget that they’re brought to life in front of you by these extraordinary people who have skills, whether it’s puppets or as animatronic experts,” he explains. “You’re surrounded by them because they’re as much a part of the cast as those who are flesh and blood.”
A Childhood Adventure
In the first-look images of Skeleton Crew, KB (Kyriana Kratter) and Fern (Ryan Kiera Armstrong) are riding on a hoverbike. Watts and Ford believed that the inclusion of the vehicle was instrumental in trying to tell the kind of childhood adventure that Skeleton Crew is aiming for. It not only influenced the story but also inspired the young cast.

“They had like little bikes and they were on rails, and so they’d like slide back and forth and left and right [so] they could turn and bank,” Watts explained.
“In reality, it looks completely insane and for the kids, the main direction was, ‘Stop smiling!’ because they were having so much fun.”

Taking inspiration from Amblin film such as Goonies and Gremlins, Skeleton Crew will be a new kind of Star Wars adventure.
The series will debut December 5 on Disney+.
