Jonathan Majors is “Heartbroken” Over Marvel’s Decision to Replace Kang With Doctor Doom
Once upon a time, it looked like Jonathan Majors would be the new king of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Following the unprecedented success of Avengers: Endgame, Marvel introduced Kang the Conquerer, a new multiversal villain poised to be the next Thanos-level threat.
Majors first played a variant of Kang, known as He Who Remains, in Season 1 of Loki before appearing as Kang the Conquerer in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. Perhaps surprisingly, the film failed to resonate with critics and audiences alike. Marvel’s headaches, however, were only just beginning.

Majors Was Eventually Fired Following His Assault Conviction
On March 25, 2023, Majors was arrested after a domestic violence incident with his then-girlfriend Grace Jabbari. While other organizations quickly cut ties with the actor, Marvel decided to let the legal process play out.
Because of the timing of the trial, Loki Season 2 aired before a verdict was reached. In the Disney+’s series second season, Majors played Victor Timely, yet another Kang variant.

When a jury eventually convicted the actor on two misdemeanor counts of assault and harassment, Marvel quickly fired Majors. The question, then, became what would happen to Kang — leading to months of speculation about whether or not Kevin Feige and his team would recast the role of Kang or move away from the character altogether.

That question was answered last weekend when Marvel announced that Robert Downey Jr. is set to return to the MCU, this time playing Victor von Doom. During San Diego Comic-Con, Feige also revealed that the upcoming Avengers 5 (which was previously titled Avengers: The Kang Dynasty) would be called Avengers: Doomsday. The message was clear, Downey was replacing Majors.
Majors Says He Is “Heartbroken”
For the first time since Marvel’s shocking announcement, TMZ caught up with Majors and asked him about the recent turn of events.

“Yeah, heartbroken. Of course,” Majors answered. “I love Kang. Doctor Doom is wicked, though.”
After the TMZ reporter noted that Downey also had his share of legal issues over the years before Marvel gave him another chance with Iron Man, Majors noted that he had not received the same kind of grace that Downey had.

“I think it’s fair that Mr. Downey is being and has been greeted with patience and curiosity and love … and [he’s] being allowed to work [his] art and be creative at that level,” Majors said. “I didn’t really get that.”
Would the Actor Return?
Finally, Majors was asked if he would return to Marvel if the studio came calling. The actor was adamant that he would.
“Hell yeah! Hell yeah! I love him. I love Kang,” he said. “If that’s what the fans want, and that’s what Marvel wants, then let’s roll. Hell yeah.”
While it seems almost impossible that Marvel would bring Majors back into the fold at this point, the actor would clearly jump at the opportunity. With Downey back in the fold and a new game plan ahead of them, Feige and his team would probably like to put as much distance between Majors and the studio as possible.
Thus ends what once appeared to be a promising partnership.
