Disneyland Cast Members To Vote on New Contract Today — Potentially Avoiding a Strike
Disneyland Resort has reached a tentative agreement with unions that represent roughly 14,000 Cast Members, potentially averting a work stoppage.
In a strong showing of solidarity, the Cast Members voted last week to authorize a strike should they not be able to come to an agreement with Disney. The Disney Workers Rising Bargaining Committee announced that 99% of Cast Members voted in favor of authorization.
The unions, which represent Cast Members at Disneyland, Disney California Adventure, Downtown Disney, and Disneyland Resort’s hotels, have been negotiating with Disney since April 24, but progress has been slow.
The Two Sides Reached a Tentative Agreement Late Last Week
Over the last couple of months, tensions between Disneyland and its Cast Members have intensified. The unions even filed a complaint of unfair labor practices for unlawful discipline, intimidation, and surveillance after Disneyland Cast Members were reprimanded for wearing union buttons.
Now, however, it looks like a deal has been reached, and labor peace is within reach.
“We care deeply about the wellbeing of our cast members and are pleased to have reached a tentative agreement with Master Services Council that addresses what matters most to our cast while positioning Disneyland Resort for future growth and job creation,” Jessica Good of Disneyland said in a statement.
What Cast Members Want
Union members have stated that they are fighting for fair wages, a fair attendance policy, improved safety, and raises based on tenure.
“Our goal for negotiations has always been to reach an agreement with Disney — one that provides cast members with wages they need to live in Southern California, the respect they deserve for the years they’ve dedicated to the company and an attendance policy that works for everyone while keeping park guests safe,” union leaders said in a statement (via MyNewsLa).
The Disneyland union members will vote on the proposed agreement today. The details of the deal have not been made public.
Hopefully, however, the issue will soon be resolved.
