Kevin Feige Explains Why Marvel Included Dafne Keen’s X-23 in the Final ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Trailer
In the lead-up to the release of Deadpool and Wolverine, Marvel has slowly peeled back the layer of secrecy surrounding the film and unveiled a few of its cameos.
With the upcoming film set to bridge the gap between the Fox X-Men movies and the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), fans are expecting to see a ton of cameos, including many familiar faces from Marvel’s past.
While Aaron Stanford’s Pyro and Tayler Mane’s Sabertooth were featured in earlier trailers, Marvel revealed one of Deadpool & Wolverine’s biggest cameos when Dafne Keen popped up in the film’s final trailer, reprising her role as X-23 from Logan.
Though fans were understandably thrilled to see Jackman and Keen reunite on the big screen, some complained that Marvel had given away one of the film’s biggest surprises before it was even released.
Kevin Feige Explains Why Marvel Revealed X-23’s Return
In a recent interview with Variety at the Deadpool & Wolverine premiere on Monday night, Marvel chief Kevin Feige was asked about the decision to reveal Keen’s return in the film’s final trailer.
According to Feige, Disney wanted to show X-23 in the trailer because her appearance previews “an emotional core of the movie.” Feige noted that Disney knows “exactly when to push a little forward and pull a little back.”
Eventually, Marvel agreed with the decision.
Keen Wanted to Attend the Premiere
As an added bonus, by letting the cat out of the bag early, Disney also allowed Keen to attend the Deadpool & Wolverine premiere.
“Dafne really wanted to go to the premiere and we said, ‘Well, she really can’t come to the premiere because it would be a spoiler.’ We hadn’t shown it yet,” Feige told Variety,
In the end, Feige says the inclusion of X-23 was “great in the final trailer” and “that meant Dafne could come to the premiere.”
Deadpool & Wolverine hits theaters on July 26.
