How to Book & Modify Your Lightning Lane Selections in Disney World
Today’s the day! Disney World’s NEW Lightning Lane system is live.
Genie+ has been rebranded into new Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Single Pass options, which have considerable differences from Genie+.

The Multi Pass option allows guests to book up to three qualifying Lightning Lanes at a time, and you can begin making your Lightning Lane selections up to 7 days in advance if you’re staying in a Disney World hotel, or up to 3 days prior if not.
Single Pass will essentially operate the same as its previous iteration, Individual Lightning Lane, which offers up a few of Disney World’s most in-demand attractions as a la carte Lightning Lanes. Guests can book up to two of these per day.

So how does booking work? We’re here to tell you all about it!
How to Book Lightning Lanes
To book a Lightning Lane, you need to log into the My Disney Experience app. Instead of requiring multiple transactions as with Genie+, Disney has changed the process a bit.

First, you must choose a park. Your initial bookings are limited to one park, even if you have a Park Hopper ticket or an Annual Pass.

If you select the Multi Pass, you will be prompted to choose up to three Lightning Lanes at a single park, even if you’re eligible to Park Hop and plan to later that day.
Disney displays the eligible ride tiers so you can easily make your selections.

If you also plan to book a Single Pass, you can make your selections at the same time. Remember, you can book up to two Single Passes per person, per day.
If you decide to book a Single Pass at a later time, you can complete your selection(s) in a separate transaction.

During your initial purchase, you are limited to a single park. However, if you have a Park Hopper ticket or an Annual Pass, we did receive a prompt to select another Single Pass at a different park that day. If you do not have a Park Hopper ticket, you will not be able to purchase a Single Pass at a different park.

Once you start making your selections, you must check out within 5 minutes to secure your time slots. The timer is displayed at the top of the screen in real-time.
When you’re finished with all your selections, you can review your choices and tap check out to pay.

Once you scan into a Lightning Lane reservation, you can book another, and so on and so forth.

You CANNOT book the same ride twice.

After we scanned into our first tier one Lightning Lane at Magic Kingdom, that’s when we were able to book our first Lightning Lane Multi Pass at another park — Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

How to Modify Lightning Lane Selections
We’ve already shown you how the booking process works, but what happens if your day changes and you need to modify an existing Lightning Lane? Is that possible with the new system? Yes!

It’s actually pretty easy to modify your selections! First, tap your booking, then Modify Selection.

After that, you’ll be prompted to choose a new time. We found that we were able to scroll through and refresh the available times to see what worked best with our day. This is a nice alternative to Genie+, which would give you a single available time slot.

You can also swap out an existing booking with a different attraction.
With your initial three Lightning Lane reservations, you can only swap tier one attractions with other tier one rides. But once you tap into your first Lightning Lane, the tier distinctions are no longer applicable, so you’re free to book multiple tier one attractions at once (provided that they’re available).

Currently, we do not see an option to remove individual party members from existing Multi Pass Lightning Lane reservations. Instead, you’d have to cancel your reservation and start over, so you’re probably better off scanning into the ride, even if some of your party does not end up riding it.

Some guests opted to book the Multi Pass and Single Pass Lightning Lanes in separate transactions because they were unable to edit the party members during the single initial transaction.
This could apply to you if, for example, you have party members unable or unwilling to ride certain Single Pass attractions, and you don’t want to pay for their Lightning Lane if they aren’t riding.

Stacking
“Stacking” refers to the notion of holding multiple Lightning Lane reservations at one time. With Genie+, you could end up stacking quite a few reservations if you strategized just right.
With the new Lightning Lane system, however, stacking is a bit trickier. The maximum number of Lightning Lanes that you can have booked at any time is three (other than Single Passes), which means if all three of your initial Lightning Lane time slots are in the evening, you can’t make any new selections until you scan into your first booking.
That means you could go all day without using the Lightning Lane service.

You might have a better shot at maximizing your Lightning Lanes by choosing time slots sooner rather than later, as each time you scan into a Lightning Lane you can immediately book another one.
Refresh, Refresh, Refresh!
By 10:30AM, we noticed that a lot of the more popular Magic Kingdom rides were already unavailable. However, we were able to find a Tiana’s Bayou Adventure Lightning Lane by refreshing the screen several times!

Our reporters noticed that available time slots showed up differently for each of them depending on when they refreshed the screen, so if you missed out on a Lightning Lane — don’t fret! There’s still a chance. You and other members of your party can try refreshing your screens to see if more time slots appear.

We actually prefer this system over Genie+, so we’re pretty excited about this change!
We’ll be playing with the new Lightning Lane system this week so stay tuned for more Disney World news!
