Central Florida Tourism Oversight District Garbage Cans Arrive at Disney World

Now that the dust has settled on the battle between The Walt Disney Company and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, it appears as if the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District (CFTOD) is here to stay.

The Florida Legislature initially created the CFTOD on February 27, 2023, as the replacement for the former Reedy Creek Improvement District. The Disney-controlled Reedy Creek was originally established in 1967 and gave the company autonomy over its land in Central Florida.

After then-Disney CEO Bob Chapek publicly criticized Florida’s Parental Rights in Education bill (which critics dubbed “Don’t Say Gay”), the state legislature dissolved Reedy Creek. The dissolution of Reedy Creek and the subsequent creation of the CFTOD led Disney to sue DeSantis in federal court for violating the company’s First Amendment rights.

The CFTOD then sued Disney in state court over last-minute binding agreements that the company made with Reedy Creek in the waning days of the special district’s existence.

A Settlement Was Reached in March

After months of back and forth, Disney and DeSantis reached a settlement in March of this year. In exchange for changes to the composition of the CFTOD board, Disney agreed to accept the new power structure in Florida.

With the legitimacy of the CFTOD no longer in question, we are starting to see more signs of the special district’s existence.

Today, for example, when visiting Disney Springs, we spotted new garbage cans featuring the CFTOD logo.

These garbage cans were located in the Disney Springs Lime Garage.

For comparison, here is a look at the old Reedy Creek garbage cans.

As you can see, the new cans feature the full “Central Florida Tourism Oversight District” name and logo.

With Disney now officially dropping its lawsuit against DeSantis over the CFTOD, we should see more of the special district’s insignia pop up.
