There Was a Time When Ryan Reynolds Thought He Would Never Play Deadpool Again
While Deadpool & Wolverine is now looking like a sure-fire box office hit, and perhaps even the savior that Marvel Studios needed, there was a time when Ryan Reynolds thought he would never play the Merc with the Mouth again.
Following the success of Deadpool 2, the future of the franchise became cloudy when Disney purchased 20th Century Fox.

“I didn’t know if I’d ever be playing Deadpool again,” Reynolds told Entertainment Weekly. “It’s not something I would’ve said necessarily publicly, but I didn’t know how a character like that would fit into that world [of the MCU].”
Marvel Had to Wait to Use the X-Men
When Marvel and Disney eventually decided that they wanted the franchise to continue, Reynolds pitched multiple ideas to Kevin Feige. His best idea was to pair Deadpool with Wolverine. Unfortunately, due to the legalities involved in Disney’s purchase of Fox, that was not possible at the time.

“I don’t want to get into corporate acquisition legal laws or whatever. I don’t understand them, but there’s a lot of ’em,” Feige said. “It took a long time between whenever [the acquisition] was announced to it all getting done, so [the characters] weren’t really in our sandbox for a very long time after that first announcement happened.”

Eventually, a few years after Disney’s purchase of Fox was finalized, Jackman’s X-Men co-stars began to appear in the MCU. First, Patrick Stewart reprised his role as Charles Xavier in Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness. Next, it was Kelsey Gammer’s turn to return as Beast in The Marvels.
Jackman’s Decision to Return
Eventually, the path was clear for Jackman to return. The actor, however, had to be sure that he was making the right decision. Even Kevin Feige told Jackman that he should keep Wolverine retired.
After considering it, however, Jackman decided to team up with Reynolds. The rest, as they say, is history.
Deadpool & Wolverine will hit theaters on July 26.
