Kevin Feige Says Marvel Was “Playing on Ryan’s Turf” For ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’
Deadpool & Wolverine is set to hit theaters next month, and the film is heading towards a record-breaking opening.
The third installment in the Deadpool franchise will not only see Hugh Jackman reprise his iconic role as Wolverine, but it will also be the first Deadpool film produced by Marvel Studios and set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Needless to say, when Disney purchased 20th Century Fox in 2019, the future of both Deadpool and the MCU changed forever.
“We Were Playing in Somebody Else’s Sandbox”
In a recent interview on The Official Marvel Podcast, Kevin Feige discussed the Deadpool experience and what the studio hoped to accomplish with their new partnership.

“We had nothing to do with the first two extremely successful Deadpool movies. Marvel Studios had nothing to do with those. So, in a way, we were playing on Ryan’s turf. We were playing on somebody else’s sandbox,” Feige explained.

“The other way is that they were coming into our sandbox. We wanted to make it unique with the blending of those styles.”
Striking the Right Tone
In the end, Feige says that Deadpool & Wolverine managed to strike just the right tone.

“It was really, really nice the way Shawn Levy, our director, and Ryan were able to come in and embrace the best of what Ryan had pioneered with Deadpool and what Hugh had pioneered on those early X-Men films and bringing them in a very irreverent way which people are already starting to piece together based on the trailers and the presence of the Time Variance Authority into our sandbox,” he teased.
Just the Beginning?
With Deadpool & Wolverine tracking towards a $200 million opening weekend, it looks like Marvel will soon have another blockbuster on their hands.

Perhaps, then, the third Deadpool film will be just the beginning of a larger partnership between Reynolds and Marvel.
