Kevin Feige Confirms ‘The Fantastic Four’ Will Be Set in 1960s New York City — Kind Of
The First Family of Marvel is set to finally enter the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) next year when The Fantastic Four hits theaters.
While we know the film will star Pedro Pascal (Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby (Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman), Joseph Quinn (Johnny Storm/The Human Torch), and Ebon Moss-Bachrach (Ben Grimm/The Thing), the plot of The Fantastic Four has been largely kept on under wraps.
Despite Marvel’s commitment to secrecy, based on the early artwork for the film, fans have been able to deduce that the film will be set in the 1960s. There has also been speculation that The Fantastic Four will be set in an alternate universe.
Kevin Feige Confirms the Film’s Setting
During a recent appearance on The Official Marvel Podcast, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige confirmed that The Fantastic Four will, in fact, be a 1960s period piece set in New York City. He also hinted, however, that it may not be the New York City that MCU fans have come to know.
“There was a piece of art we released with Johnny Storm flying in the air making a 4 symbol. And there was a cityscape in the corner of that image,” Feige began.
“There were a lot of smart people who noticed that that cityscape didn’t look exactly like the New York that we know, or the New York that existed in the ‘60s in our world. Those are smart observations, I’ll say.”
Excitement Is Through the Roof
While Marvel Studios has a ton of projects in the works, Feige admitted during his podcast appearance that he has a soft spot for The Fantastic Four.
Calling the team members “legendary pillars of the Marvel universe,” Feige couldn’t help but share his excitement.
“I’m incredibly excited for what we’re doing on ‘The Fantastic Four’ right now and what Matt Shakman — our director who did WandaVision — is working on,” Feige says. “He’s already moved to London, and we start filming at the end of July.”
The Fantastic Four will hit theaters on July 25, 2025.
