‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ Actor Tamayo Perry Killed in Shark Attack
Tamayo Perry, an actor, surfer, and lifeguard who was known for his infectious personality, has passed away after being attacked by a shark in Hawaii. He was 49.
While Perry is perhaps best known for his role as a buccaneer in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, he also appeared in Blue Crush and an episode of Hawaii Five-0.
Outside of acting, Perry was an accomplished surfer and a lifeguard with the Honolulu Ocean Safety.
The Tragic Incident
Honolulu Ocean Safety and city emergency services responded to a call regarding a man who appeared to have suffered from several shark bites near Mālaekahana Beach on Oahu’s North Shore around 1 p.m. yesterday.
Perry was then brought ashore by paramedics using a jet ski before being pronounced dead at the scene.
According to Honolulu Ocean Safety acting chief Kurt Lager, Perry was “a lifeguard loved by all.”
“He’s well known on the North Shore. He’s a professional surfer known worldwide,” Lager said. “Tamayo’s personality was infectious and as much as people loved him, he loved everyone else more.”
Perry Was Working as a Life Guard
According to the Associated Press, Perry had been working as a lifeguard for eight years and had been surfing for over a decade.
Honolulu mayor RIck Blangiardi called Perry’s death a “tragic loss.”
“Tamayo was a legendary waterman and highly respected,” he said.
Shark-Related Incidents Have Risen
Following the shark attack, warning posters have been put up in the area. Last year, there were only two reported shark-related deaths in the United States, with one occurring in Hawaii.
The University of Florida’s International Shark Attack File, however, says deadly shark attacks doubled in 2023 around the globe.
Perry is survived by his wife, Emilia.
