Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy Talks Tackling ‘Star Wars’ and Blocking Out the Noise
When Daisy Ridley makes her triumphant as Rey Skywalker, she will do so under the watchful eye of director Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.
The film, which will be set 15 years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker, will follow Rey as she tries to fulfill her promise to Luke Skywalker and rebuild the Jedi Order.

On the surface, Obaid-Chinoy is an odd choice to helm a Star Wars feature film. Throughout her illustrious career, the director has largely worked within the sphere of documentaries, which have earned her two Academy Awards and seven Emmys.
Preparing For ‘Star Wars’
Recently, however, Obaid-Chinoy has begun to transition to mainstream content. After directing two episodes of Ms. Marvel, she helmed Brilliance. Now, she has her eyes set on a galaxy far, far away.

“The story that interests me most is in Rey’s journey as a female Jedi,” Obaid-Chinoy told Variety. “That’s how I can best bring my experiences to it.”
When Obaid-Chinoy finally gets into her Star Wars director chair, she will be the first woman and the first person of color to helm a film in the franchise. As she prepares to enter into a world that has a rabid and often antagonistic fanbase, the director is focusing on the story she has to tell.

“The greatest thing about ‘Star Wars’ is that everyone has a personal connection to it,” she says. “Everyone is passionate about it. And throughout the fandom, people have clear ideas about who should direct or what the sto- ries should be about. I’m just drowning out those voices until I’m done. As a storyteller, I’m focused on drawing new moviegoers into the cinema, and bringing a sense of nostalgia that will appeal to older fans of the series.”
When Will We See Obaid-Chinoy’s Film?
While The Mandalorian & Grogu will be the next Star Wars film to hit theaters, Obaid-Chinoy’s Rey Skywalker film should follow shortly thereafter. Armed with a clear vision and one of the franchise’s most popular characters, the director sounds ready to tackle a galaxy far, far away.
