Yann Demange Has Exited ‘Blade’ and I Don’t Think This Movie Is Ever Getting Made
The tumultuous production of Marvel Studio’s Blade is facing another setback as director Yann Demange has left the project.
Blade was originally announced in 2019, with Mahershala Ali cast in the titular role and Bassam Tariq set to direct.
Since that time, the film has been delayed three times, gone through five different screenwriters, including Beau DeMayo, Michael Green, Stacy Osei-Kuffour, and Nic Pizzolatto, and now is searching for its third director.
Additionally, as filming was set to begin in June 2023, production on Blade was shut down due to the WGA strike.
Five years after the film was announced, Marvel has made almost no progress on the film.
So, where does that leave Blade?
Ali Had Been Optimistic
According to a report from Variety, Demange’s departure from Blade was amicable and simply due to the film’s prolonged production. Additionally, The Fantastic Four screenwriter Eric Pearson is now working on the Blade script.
While Ali told Entertainment Weekly last December that he was optimistic about the future of Blade, it remains to be seen how long the actor’s patience will last.
“I’m sincerely encouraged in terms of where things are at and who’s on board and who’s leading the way as far as the writing of the script and the directing and all that,” Ali said late last year.
Will ‘Blade’ Be Ready By Next Year?
While Blade is still theoretically set to hit theaters on November 7, 2025, that seems increasingly unlikely. Marvel needs to hire yet another director for the project and give Pearson time to finish the script.
At this point, it feels like it would be a miracle if Blade ever materializes.
