Pixar Will Release an HDR Version of ‘Inside Out 2’ To Select Theaters
With Pixar making no secret of the fact that it needs Inside Out 2 to be a hit, the studio is pulling out all the stops for the arrival of the film in theaters this weekend.
According to a new report from Variety, that includes rendering a version of the film in high dynamic range (HDR), which will provide expanded contrast and luminance in select theaters.
The HDR version of the film requires cinemas to have specific equipment. Essentially, they need to have theaters with LED displays rather than traditional projection systems.
Pixar Uses New Technology to Enhance Its Stories
“We’re very excited in general about the future of cinema, as it relates to opportunities for storytelling,” Pixar’s senior scientist Dominic Glynn said “It does lead to new opportunities to tell stories and bring immersion to audiences.”
According to Glynn, Pixar wants to use different technologies, including HDR and 4K to “to really sing … so if there’s an attribute [to a tech] which sort of makes it unique, we often offer that up to our filmmakers as an opportunity.”
For Theaters Than Ever Are Equipped For HDR
This is not the first time that Pixar has released HDR-specific versions of its films to theaters.
Both 2022’s Lightyear and 2023’s Elemental also got the HDR treatment, as did Soul, Turning Red, and Luca when those Disney+ were sent to theaters earlier this year. Still, in the intervening time since the release of Lightyear, more and more theaters have been equipped with HDR technology.
This means that more fans than ever will get a chance to view the enhanced version of Inside Out 2.
Inside Out 2 will hit theaters on June 14.
