Andrew Stanton Will Seemingly Direct ‘Toy Story 5’
After the disappointing reception to 2022’s Lightyear, Pixar isn’t taking any chances with its flagship franchise.
During a recent screening of Inside Out 2, Pixar COO Pete Doctor confirmed that longtime Pixar veteran Andrew Stanton will direct the upcoming Toy Story 5 (via The Monty Verse).
Stanton has a long and storied career with Pixar, joining the burdening animation studio in 1990 as its second animator. He would go on to write Toy Story, Toy Story 2, and Monsters, Inc., helping turn Pixar into one of the preeminent names in animation.
A Storied Career
Following Monsters, Inc., Stanton made his director debut with 2003’s Finding Nemo. The film would become a smash hit, earning Stanton his first Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and a nomination for Best Original Screenplay.
Stanton followed up on his Finding Nemo success with WALL-E. The film was another massive success for Pixar, earning Stanton his second Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
Subsequently, Stanton served as an executive producer on Ratatouille, Up, Brave, Inside Out, Monsters University, and The Good Dinosaur. He would return to his director role for Finding Dory.
Stanton Has Been a Part of Every ‘Toy Story Film
Despite all of his accomplishments, however, Stanton continued to be heavily involved in the Toy Story franchise. In fact, he returned to write Toy Story 3 and co-wrote Toy Story 4.
While it remains unclear (though seemingly likely) whether or not Stanton will write Toy Story 5, we know that he will be involved. That should be seen as a win by all Toy Story fans.
The film is set to hit theaters on June 19, 2026.
