Marvel Originally Planned for Loki’s Death in ‘Thor: Dark World’ to Be Permanent — But There Was a Problem
Throughout his 13-year run in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Tom Hiddleston’s Loki has managed to cheat death a number of times.
In a recent interview with Backstage, Hiddleston reflected on his Marvel career and the many instances where he believed Loki had run out of luck.

“Let me think about this,” the actor told the publication. “I think, officially, there were two big ones.”
Loki’s Death in ‘Thor: Dark World’ Was Supposed to be Permanent
While Hiddleston has previously discussed the surreal day filming Avengers: Infinity War, when it looked like his character’s story finally had come to an end (including the touching moment he shared with Josh Brolin), during his latest interview, Hiddleston revealed that Loki’s death in Thor: The Dark World was similarly supposed to be permanent.

“As written in the first script, it was a true sacrifice,” Hiddleston recalled.
Fortunately, none of the test audiences bought it.

“When Marvel [executives] were testing the movie, they’d given [viewers] questionnaires that said, ‘Is there anything you didn’t understand?’” he remembers. “Literally every single audience member said, ‘Well, obviously, Loki’s not really dead.’”
“I Spend a Lot of Time Thinking About Loki”
Thus began a frequent pattern of Loki escaping death in one way or another. Even after Thanos crushed the God of Mischief in Infinity War, Hiddleston’s story continued. He reprised his role as a variant of Loki, first in Avengers: Endgame and later in the hit streaming series Loki.

“Maybe Loki escaping death a couple of times is sort of an emblem of who he is in our culture,” he says.
“I spend a lot of time thinking about Loki. You can probably tell.”

Is This the End?
At the end of Loki Season 2, the newly christened God of Stories finally found his “glorious purpose,” sitting alone at the end of time, literally holding the multiverse together.
Whether or not Hiddleston’s time in the MCU is done, he knows who he has to thank for the pleasure of the last 13 years.

“I’m so aware that the reason I’ve been able to play him for so long is because of the audience’s curiosity and passion,” Hiddleston says. “I’ve been delighted to find that for a character of such stature, he’s remarkably human. Many of the characteristics that people connect to in Loki are deeply human feelings. That’s been the pleasure, is infusing this elevated character with humanity.”
