Daniel Brühl Explains Zemo’s ‘Thunderbolts*’ Absence
A new kind of Marvel superteam is set to assemble next year with the arrival of the Thunderbolts*.
Unlike the heroic and often clean-cut Avengers, the Thunderbolts will be comprised of former villains and anti-heroes, including Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), Red Guardian (David Harbour), Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen), the Winter Soldier (Sebastian Stan), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), and U.S. Agent (Russell).

While fans are understandably excited to explore the seedier side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), there also seems to be a glaring omission in the new team’s lineup.
Where Is Baron Zemo?
As Marvel comic book fans know, the Thunderbolts have traditionally been led by Baron Zemo. While the comics often depict Zemo as one of Captain America’s great adversaries, the MCU has taken a different route with the character.
Within the film franchise, Zemo debuted in Captain America: Civil War. Portrayed by Daniel Brühl, the baron managed to tear the Avengers apart. He then returned for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, where his character was fleshed out as a true antihero.

Given Zemo’s popularity and his natural connection to Bucky, Barnes should have made the character a natural selection for the Thunderbolts*. Nevertheless, Bruhl has made it clear that he will not appear in the film.
Brühl Says He Will Return
During a recent interview with ScreenRant, however, the actor was adamant that he would still return to the MCU at some point.

“It’s fine for me, I can wait. [Laughs] I’m a very patient man. No, I’m not, but it’s funny, because in the meantime, I just wrapped on a show that’s called ‘The Franchise,’ where it’s actually a satire about the superhero universe, so it was fun to switch sides, so to say,” he explained.
“But knowing Marvel, they have a lot of sense of humor, so they will probably find it as funny as I did. And who knows, I mean, I’m still not dead, I’m very confident that I’ll be back.”

While Zemo will not appear in Thunderbolts*, there are seemingly other opportunities for the character to reappear on the horizon.
When We Could We See Zemo Again
The most obvious opportunity for Brühl to reprise his role would be Captain America: Brave New World, where Zemo could reconnect with Sam Wilson.

The other possibility could be the next Black Panther story, as Zemo previously had run-ins with the Dora Milaje.

In any case, it is good to hear that Bruhl believes that we have not seen the last of Baron Zemo.
