Tom Hiddleston Says He Felt “Insane and Foolish” During His Iconic ‘Avengers’ Fight With Hulk
Throughout the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) canon, there are few scenes more memorable than Hulk’s “fight” with Loki in The Avengers.
For those who don’t remember, the scene comes near the end of the film as the Avengers finally battle Loki face-to-face.

After being thrown through a building by the Hulk, Tom Hiddleston’s Loki is seemingly fed up.
“Enough! You are, all of you, beneath me. I am a god, you dull creature,” the God of Mischief begins.
In the middle of his soliloquy, however, Hulk picks Loki up and begins to smash him repeatedly into the ground.
“Puny god,” Hulk mutters as he walks away.
Hiddleston Says He Felt “Foolish” Filming the Scene
The fight would long be remembered as one of the MCU’s most iconic and quotable scenes. It would also launch a running gag through future Marvel films where Loki was terrified of Hulk.
12 years after The Avengers hit theaters, Tom Hiddleston sat down with Variety to reflect on some of his most famous lines. When the topic of his fight with Hulk came up, the actor admitted that it was a tough day on set.

“I felt insane and foolish. And I alternated between insanity and folly all day [laughs],” he recalled.
How the Fight Was Filmed
Reflecting back on the scene, Hiddleston explained that The Avengers effects team created “Loki-shaped trenches on set” to bring the action scene to life.
“The effects team and the art department had dug out little Loki-shaped trenches in the set. My job was to jump in and out of these trenches as hard as I can and as high as I can to replicate the effect of being smashed. I remember specifically after saying this line ‘I am a god you dull creature and I will not be bullied by an animal,'” he recalled.

“We wanted to create the effect of absolute spontaneity. Loki had no idea what was coming. He was puffed up with all his sense of superiority and status and that that would be completely undercut by him just being wrenched out of frame. And that’s exactly what happened.”

Since their memorable battle in The Avengers, both Ruffalo’s Hulk and Hiddleston’s Loki have continued to play major roles in the MCU. While Hiddleston’s story may have finished with Season 2 of Loki, perhaps we will see the two characters together again.
