‘Moana 2’ Shatters Disney’s Animated Trailer Record
Since its release in 2016, Moana has proven to be perhaps Disney’s most popular film.
Despite being seven years old, Moana was the most streamed movie of 2023, with 11.6 billion minutes viewed. That was more than enough to beat out new releases, including Encanto, The Super Mario Bros. Movie, and Elemental.
Perhaps in testament to Moana‘s lasting popularity, Disney CEO Bob Iger recently surprised fans by announcing that Moana 2 will sail into theaters this Thanksgiving.
“Moana remains an incredibly popular franchise,” said Iger. “And we can’t wait to give you more of Moana and Maui when Moana 2 comes to theaters this November.”
A Record-Breaking Trailer
Set three years after the events of the original film, Moana 2 will follow the adventures of an older and wiser Moana as she receives an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors. Tasked with setting sail once again and connecting the people of Oceania, Moana soon finds herself in uncharted waters.
In another testament to just how popular Moana remains, the Moana 2 trailer has become Disney animation’s most-watched trailer ever, garnering 178 million in 24 hours.
That number easily topped the previous record holders Inside Out 2 (157 million) and Frozen 2 (116 million).
Viewership numbers are tabulated across online platforms, including TikTok, YouTube, X, Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat.
