Why Hugh Jackman Decided to Return For ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’
Hugh Jackman has made no secret of the fact that he believed his time portraying Wolverine had come to an end with 2017’s Logan.
Even after Ryan Reynolds came calling with the idea to unite the iconic X-Man with Deadpool for the third installment in the later’s franchise, Jackman was not sure what to do.

“I was driving, I was on my way, I was just driving and literally just like a bolt of lightning came this knowing deep in my gut that I wanted to do this film with Ryan, for Deadpool and Wolverine to come back together,” Jackman told Fandago’s Jacqueline Coley.
“And Jacqueline, I swear to you, when I said I was done I really thought I was done.”
Something Was Nagging at Jackman
Still, Jackman had a nagging feeling that there was another Wolverine story to be told.
“But in the back of my head, ever since I saw ‘Deadpool 1,’ I was like, those two characters together, I knew it. I knew the fans wanted it. Ever since I’d put on the claws people talked about these two,” he explained.

Interestingly, even Marvel head Kevin Feige advised Jackman against returning. Feige believed that the ending to Logan was so perfect that Jackman should not even try to reprise his role.

“I said, ‘Let me give you a piece of advice, Hugh. Don’t come back,’” Feige added. “‘You had the greatest ending in history with ‘Logan.’ That’s not something we should undo.’”
The First Call Was to Reynolds
Eventually, however, Jackman made up his mind that he wanted to return. Once the decision was made, his first call was to Reynolds.

“So that had always been there, but I just knew. And I literally couldn’t wait to arrive. As soon as I arrived I rang Ryan and I just said, let’s do it. Like, I hadn’t rung my agent, no-one. I had to ring my agent and said, oh by the way, I’ve just committed to a movie!” he recalled.
“Sometimes in life things come really clearly to you, and when that happens I’ve learned you just jump, you go for it.”

If fan reaction to Deadpool & Wolverine is any indication, Jackman made the right choice. Still, the proof will be in the pudding when the film debuts in theaters on July 26.
