Ryan Reynolds Was “Surprised” Disney Let ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Lean Into Its R Rating
When Deadpool & Wolverine hits theaters this July, the film will mark a series of firsts for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
The third installment in the Deadpool franchise will not only be the first entry in the franchise to be released by Marvel Studios, but it will also be the first MCU film to be R-rated.

Speaking with Fandango’s Jacquline Coley today, Ryan Reynolds admitted that he was surprised that Disney let the Deadpool & Wolverine team lean so heavily into its R-rating.

“I’m really proud of them for doing this,” Reynolds said. “I think it’s a huge step for them. It adds a whole other color to this kaleidoscopic wheel that is that company. And the different people that they have been entertaining for forever.”
Disney Gave the ‘Deadpool’ Team Freedom
When Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox was initially announced, many fans worried that Disney would neuter Deadpool. Luckily, according to Reynolds, Disney not only kept the tone of the original films but gave Deadpool & Wolverine the freedom to create the film that they wanted.
“I was surprised though that they let us go as Hard R, but very grateful. I mean there’s no other way to do it,” Reynolds explained.
“For this character and this world and particularly ‘Logan’ being an R-rated film as well, I felt like that was the most full-throated version of Wolverine or Logan that we’ve ever seen as well, so it really allowed us a lot of freedom, not exploiting the R rating just to do R-rated stuff, but really allowing us to do anything and everything in a world where anything and everything is possible.”

As Deadpool & Wolverine will be the only Marvel Studios film released this year, all eyes will be on the film’s success. So far, everything seems to point toward a massive hit.
