‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Was Not Initially Going to Tie Into ‘Daredevil’ — But That’s Changed
After a particularly difficult production, Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofio are finally set to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) for next year’s Daredevil: Born Again.
The highly anticipated reboot of the popular Netflix series Daredevil will further develop the world of Marvel’s street-level heroes, with Cox portraying the titular hero (also known as Matt Murdock) and D’Onofrio returning as the mobster Kingpin.
Daredevil: Born Again was initially announced in 2022, with the expectation that the series would be a brand-new take on the character.
A Creative Overhaul
During last year’s SAG-AFTRA strike, however, Kevin Feige and Marvel executives watched the nine completed episodes of Daredevil: Born Again and decided that the series needed to be overhauled.
Subsequently, Marvel decided to officially make the original Netflix Daredevil series (as well as the other Defenders Saga show) canon and tie Born Again into the original series.
According to Cox and D’Onofrio, the original plan for Born Again was to keep the show separate from the original Daredevil series. That changed, however, during the creative overhaul.
“It originally wasn’t going to be at all, but now it’s a lot,” D’Onofrio said.
Walking a Fine Line
While Born Again will now feature direct links to the original series, including a bevy of returning stars, Cox knows that the new show needs to walk a fine line.
“That’s a really fine balance to strike,” Cox continued. “If you’re going to remake a show and call it season 1 and it was a successful show and it was kind of beloved, then you’ve got to do what people liked. But also you’ve got to have a reason for remaking it. So you have to change it up a bit. And that’s just a really fine balance to find.”
Now that the dust has settled, however, Cox believes the Born Again team has struck the right chord.
“I think that they’ve done a beautiful job doing that. And hopefully, the old fans – the O.G.s – will love it and also. We’ll maybe pick up a few more fans on the way.”
Daredevil: Born Again will debut on Disney+ next March.
