Tim Blake Nelson Talks Playing Leader in ‘Captain America: Brave New World’
While Captain America: Brave New World will follow the adventures of Sam Wilson as he assumes the mantle of Captain America from Steve Rogers, the film will also have strong ties to 2008’s The Incredible Hulk.
So far, we know that Incredible Hulk antagonist Thunderbolt Ross will play a prominent role in the film (with Harrison Ford assuming the role from the late William Hurt), and Liv Tyler will return as Betty Ross for the first time since her debut in the 2008 Hulk film.
Perhaps more interestingly, however, Brave New World is set to see the return of Tim Blake Nelson, who will see his character Samuel Sterns transformed into the iconic Hulk villain, Leader.
How Marvel Will Bring the Leader to Life
During a recent appearance on Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum, Nelson expressed his excitement about the upcoming Marvel film and gave a glimpse behind the curtain at how the Brave New World team brought the Leader to life.
“[I’m] very happy about it. It’s a wonderfully directed movie by Julius Onah… I can tell you about my character that we did everything we could – and this was entirely supported by Marvel. And I’m so grateful to Kevin Feige and Nate Moore for supporting this. Because they were on board 100 percent to do the character of the Leader as practically as possible with an absence of digital stuff,” Nelson explained.
“So I really credit Marvel and also Julius in wanting to make a very much reality-based superhero movie – as oxymoronic as that sounds. In terms of our approach to the Leader, that’s really where we went, and I was really gratified to get to do it that way.”
Marvel Seems to be Shying Away From CGI
Recent Marvel releases, including Secret Invasion, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, have been criticized by fans and critics alike for their poor CGI.
Nelson’s latest comments echo those made by Kathryn Hahn about Agatha All Along. The actress also revealed that the series’s team tried to use practical effects whenever possible.
With a slower release schedule, it looks like Marvel is attempting to reel back the CGI whenever possible.
