‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ Reigns Supreme at the Box Office
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes reigned supreme at the box office this weekend, delivering a domestic total of between $52 and $54 million and a global total of $125 million.
The latest installment in the Planet of the Apes franchise not only marks Disney’s debut at the 2024 box office but also marks the most important non-Avatar release that 20th Century Studios has had since being acquired by Disney.
During Disney’s Q2 earnings call last week, Iger admitted that the company was not necessarily looking to “lean into” the Fox library.
“We continue to look at the library to see what can be mined,” he said. “I don’t think we’re necessarily going to lean into the library but we’re going to look opportunistically at it.”
The Next Installment ‘Planet of the Apes’ Franchise
Directed by Wes Ball, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is set several generations after Caesar’s reign, in a time where apes are the dominant species and live harmoniously, while humans live in the shadow.
As a new ape tyrant named Proximus Caesar ascends to the throne, he quickly enslaves the other clans in search of the last traces of secret human technology.
Meanwhile, a young ape named Mae sets out on a harrowing journey. Eventually, he begins to question everything he knows about the past.
A Boon for Disney
So far, both critics and fans have praised Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
The film’s success is likely especially welcome after last year’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny bombed at the box office.
Finally, Disney once again has an action hit on their hands. The fact that it is a successful new entry in a Fox franchise is icing on the cake.
Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is in theaters now.
