Shawn Levy Says That ‘Deadpool & Wolverine’ Is More Than Simply ‘Deadpool 3’
While Deadpool & Wolverine will technically be the third installment in the Deadpool franchise, according to director Shawn Levy, the film will be more than simply just Deadpool 3. Instead, Levy is promising fans a “two-hander character adventure.”
“As far as crafting the Deadpool and Wolverine story, I just felt privileged every day because you’re talking about two massive movie stars in their most iconic roles,” Levy told Screen Rant at CinemaCon. “It also gave me an opportunity. It’s the third Deadpool movie, but it’s not Deadpool 3. It’s a different thing that’s very much Deadpool and Wolverine. And it’s not trying to copycat anything from the first two movies. They were awesome, but this is a two-hander character adventure.”
Although Hugh Jackman’s return to his iconic role as Wolverine has been the focus of much of the press leading up to the film’s release, audiences have yet to see footage of Deadpool and Wolverine together.
According to Levy, however, when the two iconic Marvel characters do finally team up, it’s “going to be gnarly” and “it’s going to be funny.” Ultimately, however, the Deadpool team “wanted to build a great time at the theater for audiences.”
Test Screenings Have Been “Extremely Promising”
Throughout early screenings of the film, it sounds like Levy and his cohorts have achieved their goal. The early screenings, he says, “were extremely, extremely promising.”
“I wouldn’t say that there were any big surprises, but you feel where the pace wants to tighten. You feel where you can afford to slow down and have a deeper, more durable character moment,” he added.
Deadpool & Wolverine will hit theaters on July 26.
