National Geographic Lays Off Its Writing Staff
As part of The Walt Disney Company’s last round of job cuts, National Geographic, the iconic yellow-framed magazine, has laid off its remaining staff writers this week.
19 National Geographic staffers were cut during the latest round of layoffs, although they remained working until this week. In total, the Walt Disney Company has slashed nearly 7,000 jobs in 2023.
The Future of National Geographic
National Geographic has chronicled the natural world for more than 100 years and had over 1.7 million subscribers at the end of 2022. The magazine will continue to publish its monthly issues.
“Staffing changes will not change our ability to do this work, but rather give us more flexibility to tell different stories and meet our audiences where they are across our many platforms,” the spokesperson said. “Any insinuation that the recent changes will negatively impact the magazine, or the quality of our storytelling, is simply incorrect.”
The institutional American magazine will now rely on freelance writers to fill its pages, and will also shift to an increased social media presence.
Former Employees Break News
While National Geographic has since confirmed that its staff writers have exited the company, the news initially came from the former staff members themselves.
“My new National Geographic just arrived, which includes my latest feature — my 16th, and my last as a senior writer,” wrote Craig Welch. “NatGeo is laying off all of its staff writers. I’ve been so lucky. I got to work [with] incredible journalists and tell important, global stories. It’s been an honor.”
Former National Geographic writer Douglas Main had a similar response.
“National Geographic is laying off its staff writers, including me,” he wrote on Twitter. “It’s been a wonderful five years — an honor and a joy. Very proud of the work that my colleagues and I have done here.”
National Geographic was founded in 1988. The magazine first reached 1 million subscribers in the 1930s.
