Could Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Be Getting a Muppets Retheme?
We’ve got an interesting bit of news for your Thursday afternoon. If you keep up on Walt Disney World news, you may have heard rumors swirling for a while that a re-theme could be coming to Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster at Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World. Tongues REALLY got wagging when the attraction closed down in February for several months before opening without major changes just a few weeks ago. However, it looks like plans for the popular Disney World coaster may still be in the pipeline. Theme Park Tourist recently published an article speculating that a Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Muppets Mayhem retheme could be in the cards and surprisingly Co-Creator of the series took to Twitter to confirm that the idea HAS been on the table.
You can check out Jeff Yorke’s post below:
Not gonna lie– this was absolutely part of our original pitch and is another piece of this dream. Fingers-crossed that it happens. 🤞🏻🤞🏻 #TheMuppetsMayhem
RUMOR – Muppets Mayhem To Replace Aerosmith On Rock ‘n’ Rollercoaster, Fans Give It A Thumbs UP! https://t.co/TBitIw5yPh
— Jeff Yorkes (@JeffYorkes) June 8, 2023
From the tweet above it still looks like any change to the existing Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster is still in the very early stages. Yorkes said above that that retheming Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster was part of the original pitch. However, he went on to say “Fingers crossed that it happens” suggesting that it still might be in the preliminary stages.
Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster has been one of the big thrill rides at Disney’s Hollywood Studios since it first opened back in 1999. In its current incarnation, the ride follows legendary rock band Aerosmith as they wrap up a recording session and must zip through down to a concert in their stretch limo with you riding along.
The indoor coaster is a favorite with thrill ride seekers and featured 3 inversions, 2 rollover loops, and a corkscrew. Each ride vehicle “limo” is also kitted out with 125 speakers, 24 subwoofers, and a 32,000-watt audio system to blast out some of Aerosmith’s most well-known songs including “Walk This Way”, “Love in an Elevator”, and “Sweet Emotion.”

With the coaster being over two decades old in its current incarnation, the argument is that the ride is a bit dated. This is leading insiders to speculate that a re-theme could be in the works. In addition to The Muppets re-theme, we also heard that Disney could replace Aerosmith with another musical act like Queen.
With Disney owning The Muppets and with a Muppets presence already at Hollywood Studios including MuppetVision 3D, incorporating the muppets into this attraction would be a nice fit. Using the recent Disney+ series Muppets Mayhem also allows the ride to maintain its musical element. For those unfamiliar, Muppets Mayhem, which is currently available to stream, follows The Electric Mayhem, a band that originally appeared on The Muppet Show and features Dr. Teeth, Animal, Floyd Pepper, and Janice.

In addition to The Muppets mentioned above, The Electrum Mayhem also features Lilly Singh, Tahj Mowry, and Saara Chaudrey. Singh plays a music executive and helps The Electrum Mayhem Band navigate the music scene. The series is based on the characters created by Jim Henson and was written and executive produced by Adam F. Goldberg (The Goldbergs), Bill Barretta (The Muppets, Muppets Haunted Mansion), and Jeff Yorkes. Music is by executive music producer and Songwriter Hall of Fame inductee Linda Perry.

In the end, it probably all comes down to how well The Muppets Mayhem performs on Disney+. In a positive sign, the series has done well with audiences and critics alike and currently has an 85% critic rating and 96% audience approval ratings on Rotten Tomatoes. This is a story that we will continue to follow closely. If there are any more murmurings about the future of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster we promise to keep you posted
