May 16th was a slower day in Disney history, but it still featured a monumental occasion for the company, the premiere of a Pixar classic, and the loss of a Disney Legend. So, let’s get going!
Walt Disney Applies For “Mickey Mouse” Trademark (1928)
On this day in 1928, Walt Disney applied for a trademark for “Mickey Mouse” for use in motion pictures.
Although the Mickey trademark has since lapsed, it was extended by an act of Congress.
Two Gun Goofy Released (1952)
On this day in 1952, the Goofy short Two Gun Goofy was released.
In the cartoon, Goofy is made the sheriff of a small town after accidentally foiling a stagecoach robbery.
Jim Henson Passes Away (1990)
On this day in 1990, Jim Henson passed away at the age of 53.
The Muppet creator was in the midst of negotiations with Disney for the use of his characters in the Disney Parks at the time of his death.
Muppet Vision 3-D Opens (1991)
On this day in 1991, Jim Henson’s Muppet Vision 3-D opened at the DIsney-MGM Studios.
The attraction was the last Muppet project that Jim Henson worked on prior to his death.
Jonas Brothers: Living the Dream Debuts (2008)
On this day in 2008, Jonas Brothers: Living the Dream debuted on Disney Channel.
The reality series followed the life of the popular band and would run for two seasons.
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian Released (2008)
Also on this day in 2008, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian was released.
The second Narnia film to be distributed by Disney, Prince Caspian saw Narnia conquered by the Telmarines and under the control of the evil King Miraz.
Up Has Its World Premiere (2009)
On this day in 2009, Up had its world premiere at the El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood.
The latest film from Pixar, Up told the story of an unlikely friendship between the cantankerous Carl and the naive Russell, who go on an adventure to Paradise Falls.
Million Dollar Arm Released (2014)
On this day in 2014, Million Dollar Arm was released.
Based on a true story, the film was about two baseball pitchers who are discovered after winning a reality show competition in India.
Disney Announces Newest Disney Legends
Finally, on this day in 2019, Disney announced its newest class of Disney Legends.
Among those to be inducted later in the year were Wing Chao, Robert Downey Jr., Jon Favreau, James Earl Jones, Bette Midler, Kenny Ortega, Barnette Ricci, Robin Roberts, Diane Sawyer, Mind-Na Wen, and Hans Zimmer.
