‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ Soars In Box Office Previews
As James Gunn and the Guardians of the Galaxy set out for one last adventure, it was not only the universe they were trying to save, but also Marvel’s prospects at the box office.
Following the disaster that was Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, and the turmoil surrounding Jonathon Majors, all eyes were on the third Guardians film.
So far, at least, everything seems to be looking up for Marvel.
Marvel’s Comeback
Not only has Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 received a much better review than Quantumania, but the film did well in box office previews, earning a franchise-best $17.5 million.
While Disney had initially projected a $130 million opening weekend, those projections dropped to $120 million in the most recent forecasts.
That number would put Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 behind its predecessor, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which earned $146 million in its domestic debut.
If Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 cannot outpace the first two entries in the film, it would not be only the third Marvel sequel to fail to beat the franchise’s preceding film. Previously, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Avengers: Age of Ultron fell short of their franchise’s mark.
A Hit With Critics and Audiences
On the positive side, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has gotten rave reviews from both critics and audiences. It is possible that moviegoers who were put off by Quantumania could return to theaters after hearing positive reviews.
In order to become the top-grossing film in the Guardians franchise, Vol. 3 will have to top Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2‘s $836 million haul.
Whether or not the film can reach those heights, however, remains to be seen.
