Disney and Pixar’s ‘Elemental’ To Close Out Cannes Film Festival
Pixar has a lot riding on the upcoming release of Elemental.
Following the Disney+ releases of Soul, Luca, and Turning Red, the studio returned to theaters last year with its Toy Story spin-off Lightyear.

That film proceeded to bomb at the box office, giving the studio the biggest financial loser in its history.
Now, with Elemental poised to get Pixar back on track, the studio is pulling out all the stops.

Elemental To Premiere At Cannes
The Cannes Film Festival announced today that Elemental will be the last film shown at this year’s gathering.
The film will be presented Out of Competition on May 27, ahead of its June 16 release date.

Elemental will be the fourth Pixar film presented in the Official Selection, after Up, Inside Out, and Soul.
According to Pixar’s chief creative officer Pete Docter, this year’s return to Cannes was particularly special.

“As we all emerge from our pandemic cocoons and come together in story rooms, animation dailies and impromptu brainstorming sessions, it’s a joy and honor to have Pixar back on La Croisette. Directed by the extraordinary storyteller Peter Sohn, Elemental is so funny, full of heart and, frankly, stunning to see. It was created for audiences to experience on the big screen and I love that it’ll make its world premiere at Cannes.”

Introducing Element City
Pixar’s newest film is set in the world of Element City. Here, charters representing the elements of fire, water, earth, and air live side by side in harmony. The film will tell the story of a fire element Ember Lumen and a water element Wade Ripple, who grow close.

For their part, Cannes seemed happy to welcome Pixar back.
“For many years, the Festival de Cannes has welcomed animated films from around the world. Pixar Animation Studios, with Up, directed by Pete Docter, made Cannes history by opening the 62nd edition of the Festival in 2009. It was a wonderful event!” said Cannes Film Festival head Thierry Frémaux.

“This is another great opportunity, to present the amazing Elemental, for the ‘Last Screening’ of this 76th Festival de Cannes, and to think about our lives in such a powerful way.”
While a Cannes release does not inherently mean that Elemental will resonate with audiences, it does mean that Pixar has high expectations for the film.

The proof will be in the pudding, however, when Elemental hits theaters on June 16, 2023.
