We Almost Got An Anakin Skywalker Cameo in ‘The Mandalorian’
While The Mandalorian fans have known for years that Grogu somehow survived Emperor Palpatine’s fatal “Order 66,” the third season of the show has given us more insight into what happened.
Initially, Grogu was attacked inside the Jedi Temple, before being protected by a series of Jedi and saved by Kelleran Beq.
Since Grogu was in the temple when Order 66 was issued, many fans have speculated that he may have come face to face with Anakin Skywalker, who attacked the temple after falling to the dark side.
While this ended up not being the case, Mandalorian executive producer Dave Filoni recently revealed that The Mandalorian team considered including Anakin in the flashback.
“I discussed it with Jon briefly and I said, you know, there were some opportunities there. We always have to kind of look at every possibility,” Filoni told Insider.
Fear of Overuse
In the end, however, producers quickly decided against the idea. For one thing, they didn’t want to overuse the character.
“At the end of the day though, a character like Anakin, one of George’s characters, we have to be very careful how we utilize those characters. It’s very special when we do,” Filoni said, referencing Star Wars creator George Lucas. “So, I think we quickly moved away from that.”
More importantly, however, Filoni and Favreau wanted Grogu to get a chance to shine.
“We wanted Grogu to have his own story and tell it a slightly different way.”
An Anakin cameo would have overshadowed Grogu’s flashback and perhaps taken away some of the emotional impact of the scene.
Could Anakin Appear in The Mandalorian?
With that being said, Grogu meeting Anakin during their time on Coruscant is certainly intriguing and perhaps not out of the realm of possibility.
After all, Grogu would likely have been with the Jedi Order from the time Anakin arrived as a young boy, through the Clone Wars.
Filoni for one agrees that this was possible.
“It’s interesting to think that they were that close to each other. And interesting to think that even when Anakin was a little boy, that he was there at the temple at the same time as Grogu. So there’s all kinds of weird things to melt your brain and wrap your head around. But, in a fun way.”
In the end, it is probably a good thing that Grogu got his own story. Nevertheless, the idea of further exploring Anakin’s fall is tantalizing.
