Welcome back to our continuing trip through the Walt Disney Company’s past. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- March 28.
March 28th was a big day in Disney history, with the first Disney Store opening, the debut of a new icon at the Disney-MGM Studios, and the release of the first Kingdom Hearts! So, let’s get going!
The Opry House Released (1929)
On this day in 1929, the Mickey Mouse cartoon The Opry House debuted.
In the short, Mickey donned his trademark white gloves for the first time.
Elmer Elephant Released (1936)
On this day in 1936, the Silly Symphony cartoon Elmer Elephant was released.
Directed by Wildred Jackson, the short told the story of a timid elephant named Elmer who saves a Tillie the tiger from a fire.
A Gentleman’s Gentleman Released (1941)
On this day in 1941, the Disney short A Gentleman’s Gentleman was released.
When Mickey sends Pluto out to get the Sunday paper, the faithful pooch looses the dime.
Father’s Day Off Released (1953)
On this day in 1953, the animated short Father’s Day Off was released.
Directed by Jack Kinney, in the short, when Goofy’s wife leaves him home alone to do his chores, chaos ensues!
Disneyland Railroad Gets a New Engine (1958)
On this day in 1958, the Disneyland Railroad’s newest engine, the Fred S. Gurley, was commissioned into service.
The locomotive was built in 1894, at the Baldwin Locomotive Works. It is the oldest engine in use at the Disney Parks.
The First Disney Store Opens (1987)
On this day in 1987, the very first Disney Store opened.
Located in the Glendale Galleria in Glendale, California, the store was Disney’s first retail venture outside of its parks and resorts.
Baseball Debuts at the Wide World of Sports (1997)
On this day in 1997, The Atlanta Braves played the first game at Disney’s Wide World of Sports.
A capacity crowd watched the Braves beat the Reds 9-7 in the Spring Training game.
Marc Davis Puts His Handprints Down (1998)
On this day in 1998, animator Marc Davis put his signature and handprints in cement at the Disney-MGM Studios.
Davis, who was one of Walt’s Nine Old Men, joined celebrities and Disney Legends in adding his handprints.
The Sorcerer’s Hat Debuts (2001)
On this day in 2001, the Sorcerer’s Hat debuted at the Disney-MGM Studios.
The new park icon was built as pat of the 100 Years of Magic Celebration. Although originally intended to be temporary, the hat would last until 2015.
Kingdom Hearts Released (2002)
On this day 2002, Kingdom Hearts was released.
The video game was a collaboration between Disney Interactive and Square Enix. The game was a crossover featuring various Disney and Pixar properties.
Dead Man Tell No Tales Screened (2017)
On this day in 2017, Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Man Tell No Tales was screened for the fist time at CinemaCon in Las Vegas.
The fifth installment in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series will eventually premiere on May 11.
