Why Some Disney Employees Would Welcome a Layoff
With The Walt Disney Company set to lay off as many as 7,000 Cast Members as early as next week, it is an uneasy time to be working for the mouse.
Last month, Bob Iger announced his organizational restructuring of The Walt Disney Company. With this news, the Disney CEO also revealed that the company would be cutting nearly 7,000 jobs as a way to help reduce its debt load.
The large-scale cuts are expected to affect every division within the company, adding to a feeling of unease heading into April.
A Welcome Way Out
Despite the looming threat of joblessness, however, according to TheWrap, many Disney employees would actually welcome a layoff.
According to reports “I’d be happy to be laid off” is a phrase being thrown around by multiple Disney employees.
While still considered a bastion of the entertainment industry, these are not great times at The Walt Disney Company.
An ever-changing media landscape, the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, and turbulence at the top of the company have led to an unsatisfied workforce.
Other internal issues, like the company’s return-to-the-office edict and the decision to not renew many of its contract employees have hurt morale. This has led many employees, especially at the executive level, to consider what a layoff severance package would look like.
“Nobody is in a good mood,” one staffer said.
Necessary Changes
With Bob Iger attempting to undo many of the mistakes of his predecessor, and major budget cuts necessary to appease Wall Street, it may be a bumpy couple of months for the company.
Iger and other executives believe that Disney will come out stronger for the effort. Some rank-and-file employees, however, may be looking for a parachute out.
