Disney World President Issues Statement on Labor Union Agreement
In case you missed it, Disney recently came to an agreement with the service trades council union regarding employee wages.
After some time negotiating for a Cast Member wage increase, the labor union was able to reach a tentative agreement with Disney, which would increase wages to a minimum of $18 an hour by the end of 2023. Find out what Jeff Vahle, President of Walt Disney World Resort, had to say regarding this change.
Jeff Vahle’s Statement
On March 23rd, 2023, Jeff Vahle issued a statement, saying, “Our cast members are central to Walt Disney World’s enduring magic, which is why we are pleased to have reached this tentative agreement.
Disney is proud to offer an industry-leading employment package that includes comprehensive benefits and affordable medical coverage, in addition to 100 percent paid tuition for higher education for hourly employees through the Disney Aspire program. With the support of the unions, we anticipate cast members will approve this new agreement.”
Unionized and full-time Cast Members have been working without a contract since October 1st, 2022, and the $18 hourly increase would be applied retroactively to that same date.
The $18 increase would be instituted by December 2023, followed by a minimum increase of $5.50 by the end of their contract.
There will also be changes to specific classifications of unionized Cast Members, with a minimum increase to $20.50 by October 2026, or $20 per hour for Cast Members hired after December 3rd, 2023.
This proposal will be put to a union member vote on Wednesday, March 29th.
