Let’s go behind the scenes with Creative Director Mike Bithell to find out more!
Behind the Scenes
Mike is a TRON super fan. He shares, “as a child of the mid-1980s, I wore out my VHS copy.”

He adds, “as a kid, I copied computer code from magazines into my personal computer. So I thought Kevin Flynn was the coolest guy on screen as he and I were into the same thing. Years later, I fell in love with the music from TRON: Legacy – it’s the soundtrack to my life.”
I concur, it’s one of my all-time favorite soundtracks as well. The movie wouldn’t be the same without Daft Punk’s contribution!

Mike enjoys TRON’s original arcade games. He particularly loves how players can choose from four options of gameplay.
This idea played into his concept for TRON: Identity. Let’s take a look at the story behind the game.

Concept
Mike shares, “you play as Query, a detective program, in this adventure-mystery game. He is called in when something is stolen from a place called the Repository.”
He adds, “If the secrets of this stolen item were revealed, it would leave the fate of the entire Grid hanging in the balance. The choices Query makes in the game matter and affect the final outcome in major ways.”

Mike shares that a visit to Disneyland’s The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh ride inspired the portrayal of digital rain in the game. He says, “Disney Parks, in many ways, are like one giant and immersive video game.”
Mike adds, “I think Walt Disney was the original three-dimensional game designer. We took lessons from the best when creating TRON: Identity.”

Easter Eggs
As for Hidden Mickeys within the game, he says, “there are some deep cuts for fans who seek them out. I’m not one for including an ‘easter egg’ just to include one. I’d rather use those nods to advance the story or reveal something about a particular character.”
A new composer joined the team to create the soundtrack for the game. As seen in the official trailer, Mike shares that the music “respects those previous iconic soundtracks while creating something new players will enjoy.”

Mike was able to ride TRON: Lightcycle / Run at Disney World. He shares, “riding the attraction was a profound experience – it’s exhilarating and mind-blowing.”
Mike concludes, “I loved how I felt like I was stepping into the digital world of TRON at the attraction. I’m a game developer working on a TRON game and I got into the Grid – I guess I’m even closer to Kevin Flynn now.”
It sounds like a lot of thought went into the creation of this epic game. Mark your calendars for April 11, when TRON: Identity debuts!
