Dave Filoni Teases More Animated Star Wars Characters Coming To Live-Action
2023 is shaping up to be one of the biggest years in Star Wars history.
While there is no feature film on the docket until 2025, in this year alone, we are expected to get the debut of two live action shows — Ahsoka and Skeleton Crew. If that wasn’t good enough, we are also currently in the middle of The Mandalorian Season 3.
A Reintroduction To Animated Fan Favorites
One of the most interesting things about the explosion of the Star Wars live-action series has been the transition from animation to live-action that many characters have made.
From Cad Bane in The Book of Boba Fett to Bo Katan taking center stage in The Mandalorian, it has been an amazing time to be a fan of various Star Wars animated series. That doesn’t even take into account Ahsoka appearing in both shows and getting her own series this year.
Part of the reason that we have seen so many fan-favorite animated characters make the jump to live-action has been the involvement of Dave Filoni.
Filoni is currently working side-by-side with producer Jon Favreau on what many fans call the “Mandalorian universe.” While so far this universe only includes The Mandalorian and Book of Boba Fett, it is set to explode this year.
Will More Character Jump To Live-Action
Naturally, that begs the question: Will more animated characters make the jump to live action?
In a recent interview with TheWrap, Filoni was asked about future animated characters who could appear in upcoming live-action shows.
While Filoni was non-committal, he did highlight Ahsoka, which will star Rosario Dawson as the former Jedi.
“At the end of the day, I’ve been very happy with the ones that have gone over,” Filoni said of the characters who have moved from animation to live-action. “There may or may not be more in Ahsoka, if that’s your thing. If you’re excited about that, I’m just saying that one might have a few more, which makes sense, by the way. As you know, I wrote it. You can’t fault me there.”
Considering that Filoni got his start working on the Clone Wars television series, before creating Star Wars: Rebels, it makes sense that he would bring some of his former creations over to live-action.
Ahsoka Could Feature Returning Characters
Despite what many think, however, Filoni insists that he doesn’t think of re-introducing his animated characters as a top priority.
“Very rarely,” Filoni revealed when asked how often he thinks about bringing his cartoon characters to live action. “I know people think it’s the other way around, which is fascinating to me. But I think there’s two ways to look at that. Which is that, yes, they were animated characters, but to me, they’re just characters. And now I’m over here working in live-action. I’m comfortable with those characters, I know them, I like them and I like to see them around.”
While Dave Filoni insists that everything he does revolves around the story, with Ahsoka around the corner, the story just might necessitate the return of some animated fan favorites. Filoni will not only produce the upcoming Star Wars: Ahsoka, but he will also serve as the showrunner.
“At the end of the day, I’ve been very happy with the ones that have gone over. There may or may not be more in Ahsoka, if that’s your thing. If you’re excited about that, I’m just saying that one might have a few more. Which makes sense, by the way. As you know, I wrote it. You can’t fault me there.”
