Disney+ Gives Willow Reboot the Axe
We’ve got some sad news for fans of Lucasfilm’s Disney+ series Willow. The announcement was made yesterday that the live action series will not be making a return to Disney’s streaming network for Season 2.
For those unfamiliar, the Willow series was based on the 1988 fantasy film directed by Ron Howard that started Val Kilmer and Warwick Davis. The series was intended to serve as a sequel to the film with a first season that ran for eight episodes.
The series, which picked up years after the events in the original film, got a favorable response from critics with an 83% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. So what is the cause for the cancellation? According to a recent piece in DEADLINE, Lucasfilm is “reassessing its film slate” and is taking time to work out a strategy for Star Wars. With this in mind, shows such as The Mandalorian as well as upcoming projects like Ahsoka, Acolyte and Skeleton Crew are taking center stage.
In addition, as DEADLINE reminds us, with Bob Iger back at the helm of The Walt Disney Company, Disney is fine-tuning its streaming strategy and is reducing content spending as it looks toward profitability.
We are sad to see Willow go but as it was such an important part of Lucasfilm’s IP, we hope that another reboot may happen in the not-so-distant future.
