Andy Serkis Was ‘Gutted’ By Snoke’s Death In ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’
When the Star Wars sequel trilogy began with The Force Awakens, fans were introduced to the newest threat to the galaxy — Supreme Leader Snoke.
The mysterious leader of the First Order, Snoke was clearly trained in the way of the Sith. More importantly, however, he also seemingly turned Ben Solo to the dark side of the force.
The malformed Snoke certainly looked the part of a Star Wars villain. As audiences lined up to see Star Wars: The Last Jedi, it appeared as if Rey, Poe, Finn and perhaps even Luke, were on a crash course to battle the Supreme Leader.
The Supreme Leader’s Unceremonious Defeat
If you have seen The Last Jedi, then you know how this story ends. Kylo Ren unceremoniously kills Snoke midway through the film, and his story more or less stops there.
Instead of being the grand villain of the third Star Wars trilogy, Emperor Palpatine would return in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Subsequently, Snoke would be revealed to be a simple pawn of the Emperor.
While The Last Jedi would perhaps be best remembered for its divisive portrayal of Luke Skywalker, many other fans were disappointed in Snoke’s death.
Andy Serkis Was Crushed
One such person who was disappointed in the character’s fate was actor Andy Serkis, who provided the voice and motion capture for Snoke.
“Let me just phrase it like this,” said Serkis.”When I went in to read The Last Jedi, [I spent] the first 30 pages thinking, ‘This is the most incredible character.’ Then I turned the page: ‘And then Snoke gets sliced in half.’ And I was gutted. Gutted.”
The sequel trilogies’ build-up and subsequent disregard for Snoke could be seen as a red herring, keeping audiences guessing who the real villain of the trilogy is. Or, on the other hand, it may be a result of the disconnect between directors J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson — a disconnect that permeated the sequel trilogy as a whole.
While it doesn’t appear likely that Snoke will be appearing in future feature films, Serkis admits that he would love to play the character again.
“I actually really love that character. And I’m putting it out there: I wouldn’t mind if he came back,” said the actor.
Only time will tell if Serkis gets the opportunity.
