Marvel’s ‘Quantumania’ Writer Surprised By Film’s Poor Reviews
The team behind Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania was given a herculean task. The film was specifically written to not only launch Marvel into Phase 5 but also to introduce the next great Marvel villain, Kang the Conqueror.
While Quantumania dominated its first week at the box office, the film was one of the worst-reviewed films Marvel released.
The Reception Surprised The Film’s Screenwriter
According to Variety, screenwriter Jeff Loveness for one was taken aback by the criticism the film received.
“To be honest, those reviews took me by surprise,” Loveless recently told The Daily Beast about the extreme critical bashing Quantumania faced. “I was in a pretty low spot… Those were not good reviews, and I was like, ‘What the …?’”

Despite the poor reviews, however, Loveness stood by his writing. Although that didn’t make the poor reviews hurt any less.
“I’m really proud of what I wrote for Jonathan [Majors] and Michelle Pfeiffer [scientist Janet Pym],” Loveness added. “I thought that was good stuff, you know? And so I was just despondent, and I was really sad about it.”

A Rocky Start In the MCU
Quantumania was Loveness’ first foray into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Previously, he had written for Jimmy Kimmel Live! and Rick and Morty.
When joining Marvel, Loveness’ goal with Quantumania was to “make a type of adventure movie that [he] loved growing up.”
Fortunately for Loveness, joining the Marvel faithful in theaters raised his spirits.
“I’m like, ‘Goddamn! No, [the reviews] are wrong! I’m right! MODOK is great!’” he said of watching the film on opening weekend. “I’m pretty happy with it overall, and I think I learned how to take a punch this week. And now that I learned that it’s not too bad, I can just get on with making things.”
What’s Next
While Loveless was disappointed by the reception his first Marvel film received, he is not done making MCU movies.

Loveless is currently developing the script for the upcoming Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, where he will get an opportunity further delve into Majors’ character.
