Will Cara Dune Return for ‘The Mandalorian’ Season 3?
Tomorrow, the day Star Wars fans have been waiting for finally arrives. But, some have been left wondering, will Cara Dune return for The Mandalorian Season 3?
Cara Dune
Played by former MMA fighter Gina Carano, Cara Dune is introduced in Season One of The Mandalorian. Her character quickly became a favorite of fans, including me!
An ally and friend to Mando, she was once a shock trooper, aka dropper, for the Rebellion. A fearless fighter, and amazing sharpshooter, she’s a fantastic addition to the story!
Gina Carano
Lucasfilm let Gina Carano go in February of 2021, due to political comments made on social media. The abrupt news was disappointing to many, as her character was a significant part of the story.
Carano returned for a few episodes in Season 2, playing a pivotal role in reuniting Mando and Grogu. IndieWire reports that Cara Dune is still part of The Mandalorian, and shares what the team has to say about her possible return in Season 3.
Rick Famuyiwa
Executive producer and director Rick Famuyiwa says, “Cara was a big part and continues as a character to be part of the world. It had to be addressed in the creative and [Jon Favreau] took the time to think about that.”
“It was something that was discussed as we knew it was going to have impact on the show, but at the same time, what has been at the heart of the show are the two characters — Din Djarin and Grogu — so ultimately it felt like a servicing of that, and around the Mandalorians.”
Dave Filoni
Producer and creative director Dave Filoni offered a cryptic response to Cara Dune’s possible return. He says, “It’s a big galaxy and we have many characters in it — many characters are fighting for their screen time.”
“We’ll just have to see as the season unfolds what the adventures are, but it’s a great character, someone who was vital to Din Djarin’s beginnings; we’ll see if he has evolved beyond that.”
He adds, “Now Season 3 is mainly dealing with Mandalorians and the Mandalorian saga, the Mandalorian tale. Different characters he’s met since Bo-Katan take a lot more prominence, which makes sense where his arc is going, the story of him and Grogu specifically.”
Filoni concludes, “The hardest thing is finding time and space for everyone out there. George [Lucas] used to talk about when he was making the prequels, he had so many great characters and they all wanted screen time. How do you do it when your job is to tell the story of Anakin Skywalker? I relate to that.”
When Carano was let go in 2021, Lucasfilm announced that “there are no plans for her to be (employed by Lucasfilm) in the future.” That being said, there have been cases in Disney’s past where the tide turned, and fans saw things come to fruition that were previously off the table.
Dave Filoni’s comments seem to suggest that the storyline has moved on. If Cara Dune’s character does come back, I doubt the fan response would be positive if she was portrayed by another actress.
I guess we’ll just have to wait and see if Cara Dune will ever make her return to The Mandalorian. Tune in tomorrow when Season 3 premieres on Disney+!
