Tom Cruise Responds to Iron Man Rumors
Leading up to the release of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, there was widespread speculation that we might see variants of past Avengers.
While Strange did eventually come face to face with alternate versions of the Illuminati and Wanda Maximoff, none of the deceased original Avengers appeared in any capacity.
Tom Cruise As Iron Man?
One of the biggest rumors to swirl around the release of the film was that Tom Cruise would finally join the MCU, as a variant of Iron Man.
Fueling the rumor that Cruise could portray the character was the widely known fact that he had once been considered for the role of Tony Stark in the original Iron Man film. That character, obviously, would eventually be portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. The role would launch Downey to even bigger stardom.
Cruise has previously stated that he was approached by Marvel to play Iron Man as far back as 2005. In the end, it just wasn’t meant to be.
“They came to me at a certain point and, when I do something, I wanna do it right,” he said. “If I commit to something, it has to be done in a way that I know it’s gonna be something special. And as it was lining up, it just didn’t feel to me like it was gonna work. I need to be able to make decisions and make the film as great as it can be, and it just didn’t go down that road that way,” he explained.
Rumors Continue
While this dream casting obviously never came to be, the rumors persisted that Cruise could still portray the character in a future film.
If you were hoping to see Cruise don the Iron Man uniform, however, I have bad news. In a recent interview, the Top Gun: Maverick star was asked how close he was to joining the MCU as a variant Iron Man. According to the actor, it was never really a possibility.
“Not close. Not close. I love Robert Downey Jr. I can’t imagine anyone else playing this role and I think it’s perfect for him,” Cruise affirmed.
A Future For Tom Cruise in the MCU?
While it doesn’t seem that Tom Cruise will be playing Iron Man, fans would still love to see the blockbuster actor join the MCU. Would he consider playing a different character?
“I look at a movie and think, you know, I don’t rule anything out, it’s what’s the story? What’s the character? Does it interest me? Do I feel this is what an audience would like to see me in? What can I learn? What can I contribute? That’s really how I look at things.”
So there you have it. While I doubt we will be seeing Tom Cruise fighting alongside the new-look Avengers, never say never. With other A-list actors such as Harrison Ford and Jonathan Majors jumping at the chance to join the MCU, hope springs eternal that one day we can see what Marvel and Tom Cruise could create together.
