Winter Weather Could Put a Damper on Weekend Plans
As Disney readies itself for the Disney Princess Half Marathon Weekend, the country is bracing for for a massive winter storm that is expected to bring record snowfall and is impacting air travel.
According to a recent piece on NBC, states like North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin are already starting to prep for closures ahead of the Winter Weather. In addition California is also expected to face strong winds and with it potential power outages.
At the moment, storm, blizzard and high wind advisories have been extended through the Western and North/Central states. Some areas are expecting as much as 24″ of snow. Dubbed Winter Storm Olive, the impact of the winter weather is being felt from coast to coast from California to Massachusetts Drivers are being advised to stay off the road if possible due to the possibility of whiteouts.
As of yesterday at 6pm, over 1500 US flights had been cancelled with over 25% of these cancellations being at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. In addition 4,728 flights were delayed. This number includes international arrivals and departures.
For those heading to Disneyland pay close attention to the weather. Heavy winds have caused rain, snow, hail and power outages. Last night, over 68.000 people were reportedly without power in the stage. According to NBC, the National Weather Service has already warned that “there will be little to no break from the active weather in California as another Pacific storm system is forecast to approach the coast late Thursday, with continued lower elevation rain/higher elevation snow chances.”
It is certainly a weekend of extremes as the weather in Central Florida/Walt Disney World is a slightly different story. With much of the country facing cold and harsh winter weather, the opposite is true at Disney World where temperatures over the weekend expected to be in the high 80s. All eyes are on Orlando which could see temperatures reach a high of 89 degrees which would set an all-time high set in 2003.
The winter weather and its impact on travel is a story that we will continue to follow throughout the weekend. Readers are encouraged to keep following along with MickeyBlog for further Disney-related news and updates.
