This Day in Disney History- February 23
Welcome back to our magical trip through Disney history. Today we are looking at the events on this day in Disney history- February 23.
February 23 was a huge day in the history of the company, with the premiere of a legendary Mickey cartoon, a special honor for Walt Disney, and the release of a classic Disney film. So, let’s get started!
The Band Concert Released (1935)
On this day in 1935, the Mickey Mouse short The Band Concert was released.
The first official Mickey cartoon to be released in Technicolor, the short featured Mickey conducting an orchestra performing The William Tell Overture. The cartoon also featured a mischievous Donald Duck and an impending tornado.
Walt Disney Receives An Oscar (1939)
On this day in 1939, Walt Disney received a special Oscar for Snow White and Seven Dwarfs.
Shirley Temple presented Walt with one statuette and seven miniature statuettes for “a significant screen innovation which has charmed millions and pioneered a great new entertainment field for the motion picture cartoon.”
Pinocchio Released (1940)
On this day in 1940, Pinocchio was released in the United States.
Based on the Italian children novel “The Adventures of Pinocchio”, the film told the story a wooden puppet who is brought to life by the Blue Fairy.
In addition to debuting characters such as Geppetto, Figaro and Jiminy Cricket, the film also featured the classic song “When You Wish Upon A Star”.
The Disney Gallery Opens Mickey Exhibit (2002)
On this day in 2002, the Disney Gallery opened a special exhibit featuring 100 images of Mickey Mouse.
The artwork was created by Imagineer Eric Robison for Walt Disney’s 100th birthday celebration.
The Legend of the Lion King Closed (2002)
Also on this day in 2002, The Legend of the Lion King closed at the Magic Kingdom.
Located in the Fantasyland Theater, the show would eventually be replaced by Mickey’s PhilharMagic.
Captain EO Returns (2010)
On this day in 2010, Captain EO returned to Disneyland.
The show had originally played from 1986 until 1997, but was brought back as a tribute to Michael Jackson.
