Viola Davis Celebrates EGOT Win at 2023 Grammys
Viola Davis
Born in 1965 in South Carolina, Viola Davis fell in love with the arts and acting during high school. After majoring in theater in college, she attended the prestigious Julliard School.
In 1992, she starred in Shakespeare’s As You Like It, her first professional role on stage. Her big break came in 2001, in the Broadway play, King Hedley II.
Earning critical acclaim, she won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play.
At last night’s Grammy Awards, Viola Davis added another accolade to her history. Winning for Best Audiobook, Narration, and Storytelling Recording for Finding Me, she celebrated a notable feat.
EGOT Win at 2023 Grammys
The 57-year-old actor has now become an EGOT. This means that during the course of her career, she’s won an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony Award.
Her Emmy win came from How to Get Away With Murder in 2015. She won an Oscar for Fences in 2017.
As mentioned above her Tony came from King Hedley II. According to npr, Davis’ Grammy for Finding Me makes her the third Black woman in history to achieve EGOT status, and the 18th person overall.
In her Grammy acceptance speech, she shared, “I wrote this book to honor the 6-year-old Viola — to honor her life, her joy, her trauma, her everything. And it has been such a journey. I just EGOT!”
Included in the nominees she was up against were Mel Brooks, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Questlove, and Jamie Foxx.
