BREAKING: Reedy Creek is Changing but Essentially Staying the Same
This afternoon, representative Fred Hawkins (R), submitted House Bill 9B- Reedy Creek Improvement District, Orange and Osceola Counties. Essentially, Florida is changing the name to the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District and slightly changing the rules around how it’s governed. So things are changing but essentially staying the same.
There’s been a lot of debate and news about Disney’s special district, Reedy Creek. Florida political officials felt Disney needed a reminder that they are in charge after backlash from HB 1557, which states that “classroom instruction by school personnel or third parties on sexual orientation or gender identity may not occur.” Also known as the “don’t say gay” bill.
So Governor Ron DeSantis said the would dissolve the Reedy Creek Improvement District and take back power over decision making.
At the very end of the document (pg. 189), we see the following quote.
“Notwithstanding s. 189.0311(2), Florida Statutes, the Reedy Creek Improvement District is not dissolved as of June 1, 2023, but continues in full force and effect under its new name.”
Here’s what this boils down to, folks… Reedy Creek is changing but essentially staying the same. It will no longer be called Reedy Creek Improvement District. Now, instead of Reedy Creek, the same area will be called the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District. CFTOD instead of RCID.
This has all been a bunch of political theater to stir up some BS and non-news.
