Oswald’s Sweetheart Ortensia To Get in on the Lunar New Year Fun at Disneyland Resort
If character sightings are high up on your Disney priority list then you’ll love what we’re about to share with you. Ortensia the Cat and Oswald the Rabbit will take center stage at the Lunar New Year festival which kicks off today at Disney California Adventure at Disneyland Resort.
According to a recent piece in the OC Register, Oswald and Ortensia will make meet-and-greet appearances dressed up in their Lunar New Year finery. You’ll be able to find the original Disney duo at Paradise gazebo where they’ll be on hand to pose for photos and sign autographs! .
So what is the reason for bringing Ortensia out of retirement? Though I’m sure you know that its the “Year of the Rabbit” in China and South Korea, did you know that it’s the “Year of the Cat” in South Korea? Ortensia the original Disney cat is perfect to bring back for this occasion.
Ortensia will be wearing a golden skirt with lotus, apricot and peach flowers inspired by the traditional Vietnamese ao dai gown and a matching Vietnamese head piece known as a khan dong. Ortensia’s headpiece is embroidered in reds, pinks and gold.
Though Oswald is not a stranger to character meet and greets at Disneyland, Ortensia’s debut today will be her FIRST APPEARANCE in the United States. Previously she was featured during the Disney FanDaze event at Disneyland Paris.
For those unfamiliar, Ortensia is an anthropomorphic black cat. She made her debut as Oswald’s girlfriend in short The Banker’s Daughter. She’s had various names over the years including Kitty, Sadie and Fanny before being officially dubbed Ortensia. .
As the OC Register reminds us, Oswald and Ortensia were originally draw by the legendary UB Iwerks for a series of shorts for Universal Pictures. Disney would eventually lose the rights to the duo at which point Disney came up with their own new duo – Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse.
